Rick Smith was the supervising sound editor on Outlawed, a feature film I directed. He is incredibly skilled, knowledgeable and was able to adapt to the short post-production time frame.

During our initial conversations about the sound design for the film he fully understood what was required, his input and creativity gave the film an added dimension and the final result was astounding.

During post-production we ran into technical difficulties but due to his extensive knowledge he problem-solved and was able to overcome them.

 

Rick also oversaw all ADR recording and in doing so managed a team of students and other young creatives, guiding them through the audio post production process. This mentorship allowed the students the ability to gain experience on a professional production and also network with other filmmakers.

MUSIC:

I have been quietly producing music as a hobby and purely for the joy of it since I began studying Music Technology almost 20 years ago.

 

While this type of music production is not a direct example of what I intend to use the fund for - I am focusing on original composition and recording, not sampled-based music - I hope that it displays my technical capabilities and current music production knowledge and skills.

This is a selection of sample-based music from over the past 5 years. All songs are inspired by the hip-hop culture of crate digging for rare, unused samples often found in jazz, rare groove, soul and world music but also many other unusual sources.

I have been DJing for nearly two decades and have performed at music events, festivals and venues across the UK. From Nottingham to London; Machester to Birmingham; Cardiff to Leeds; and hopefully - when the pandemic ends - my new home, Bristol. 

I perform music spanning all genres including jazz and world, funk and soul, hip hop and disco, and electronic music including house and drum & bass.
